The family court in Minnesota follows guidelines to calculate child support based primarily upon the parents’ respective incomes or earning capacities. The court considers several other factors when determining the amount of child support, including:
- Earnings from interest/dividends
- Income taxes
- Previous support orders for children from another relationship
- Alimony paid or received
- Health insurance for the children
- Work-related child care expenses
- The amount of time each parent spends with the children
The courts deviate from the guidelines only in circumstances where the amount of support is unjust or inappropriate.
